CoVID Protocols

At SJCA, we are committed to the health and safety of our school community.

SJCA has implemented proactive, reasonable and effective protocols at both campuses including physical/social distancing, health screenings, face coverings (where appropriate) and increased handwashing, cleaning and disinfecting. These safety protocols will look different at each campus, at each grade level and possibly in each classroom depending on several factors like the size of the room, the age of the students, the configuration of the building and the nature of the subject being taught. 

COVID-19 Reminders: 

  • Face coverings must be worn at all times in our school buildings, except when eating or drinking. Even if your student has had CoVID-19, he or she is required to wear a mask. 
  • If you or someone in your household has tested positive for CoVID-19, please inform SJCA as soon as possible, so we can follow all proper protocols.

  • Please be honest and accurate with your health information, particularly with dates and symptoms. SJCA is doing its very best to keep everyone healthy, but we are only as good as the information we receive.
  • Please do not try to game the quarantine system by misrepresenting symptoms, dates, household contacts or other important details. This will not only lead to more students and staff members potentially being exposed to CoVID-19, but also puts our ability to provide in person instruction at risk as well.

As SJCA plans for in-person, daily instruction this school year, we are wholly committed to the health and safety of our school community. To that end, SJCA is implementing proactive, reasonable and effective protocols at both campuses. These protocols have been designed based on the most recent Centers for Disease Control (CDC) guidelines and recommendations for the safe return to school this fall.

To further assist in information gathering and decision making, SJCA is also regularly conferring with the Kenosha County Health Department, Kenosha Unified School District (KUSD), the Archdiocese of Milwaukee, the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI) and peer institutions. In addition, SJCA surveyed both our staff and our families on their comfort level in returning to school in person.  

We expect all students and families to care about and respect the health and well-being of our faculty, staff and their loved ones. Teachers reserve the right to ask students to wear masks during their class period or certain classroom activities. Please respect the requests of our faculty and staff. Many of them are making huge sacrifices to return to their classrooms. Be grateful for their service and the amazing job they do teaching our students.





  • There will be no after school programs for the second semester. This includes Chess Club, Coding Club, and Homework Club. 
  • Per the Archdiocese of Milwaukee, all K-8 school-sponsored winter athletics return during January 2021. 
  • Any events that involve large groups or gatherings will not take place until health recommendations determine these gatherings to be safe.


  • See the SJCA Athletic website at for information on fall and winter sports.
  • All high school athletes and SJCA fans will be expected to follow best practices for each sport and to follow all protocols outlined by SJCA, our coaches and any athletic venues where competition will take place.  
  • Winter sports are in full swing.
  • Given the local health department concerns regarding singing and the spread of the coronavirus, the spring musical performance is under review. 
  • There will be no study hall club meetings for second semester.  Students will report to their regularly scheduled study halls.



St. Joseph Catholic Academy will be offering the option of virtual learning for those families who are concerned about or uncomfortable with coming back to school in person at this time. Each member of the SJCA family has unique circumstances regarding health, loved ones and personal circumstances. SJCA fully values, respects and honors all of our families and the decisions each family makes in regard to their children’s education. We are ONE, whether attending SJCA in person or virtually.

  • Virtual learning will be primarily synchronous (real time) with students using an electronic platform like zoom to virtually enter the classroom during instruction time.
  • Daily attendance will be taken for those students attending school virtually. Students are expected to be on time and in school regardless of whether they attend virtually or in person.
  • Students are expected to wear SJCA uniform tops during virtual instruction.
  • As tuition costs cover compensation for our faculty and staff, tuition will be the same price for families regardless of whether your students attend SJCA virtually or in person. 
  • Students attending SJCA virtually may, at times, receive different assessments or assignments, at the discretion of the teacher.
  • Virtual learning will also be available for those students who have tested positive or have been exposed to the coronavirus and have to self quarantine for the required 10 to 14-day period and students who are feeling up to it will be expected to attend virtual learning each day of quarantine.

In order to minimize risk and maintain a healthy environment, SJCA will strictly limit access to campus buildings to visitors including parents and guardians, alumni, and volunteers.

  • Visitors to the SJCA campuses will be restricted to authorized personnel only.
  • Parents at the Lower Campus need to receive permission before they enter the school building.
  • All visitors must always wear an appropriate and approved face covering and report directly to the main office.
  • Some visitors will remain in the main office or other designated area for the duration of the visit.

  • All families will pledge to monitor their students’ health daily, including temperature and symptom checks. 
  • If your student answers YES to ANY of the questions below, he or she needs to stay home from school and follow the appropriate self-isolation steps as outlined below:
    • Have you been in close contact with a confirmed case of COVID-19? 
    • Are you experiencing a cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, sore throat?
    • Have you had a fever above 100.3 in the last 24 hours? 
    • Have you had a new loss of taste or smell? 
    • Have you had muscle aches or chills? 
    • Have you had a headache? 
    • Have you had nausea, vomiting or diarrhea? 


If your student has tested positive for COVID-19:

  • Upper Campus students please contact Mrs. Witthun at or 262-654-8651 ext. 124.
  • Lower Campus students please contact Ms. Boyd at or 262-656-7360.
  • Students who test positive for COVID will be asked to isolate and quarantine at home, following all recommendations of the health department.
  • Students who test positive for COVID can return to school when:
    • At least 10 days have passed since the student’s specimen was collected AND
    • The student is free of fever for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medication, AND
    • The student has a productive cough and is free of any other acute respiratory symptoms for at least 72 hours.
    • Even students who are asymptomatic, but tested positive for COVID, cannot return to school until at least 10 days have passed since the student’s specimen was collected.

If a student comes to school exhibiting symptoms of illness:  

  • SJCA will isolate the sick child in a supervised area until parent or emergency contact can pick the student up from school.
  • If an ill student tests positive for COVID, please follow the return to school guidelines above
  • If a student is ill but has tested NEGATIVE for COVID-19, the student can return to school:
    • After the student has been symptom-free for 24 hours AND,
    • Is fever-free for 24 hours without fever-reducing medicine.
    • If a student tests negative for COVID-19 but positive for another disease, the student must follow protocols for that diagnosed disease.


If a student has been in “close contact” with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19:

  • Please contact SJCA as soon as possible.  
  • The student must quarantine at home and cannot return to school until:
    • 14 days after the last time the student was in close contact with the person who tested positive, AND
    • The student has been fever-free for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medicine, AND
    • The student has a productive cough and no other acute respiratory symptoms for at least 72 hours, AND
    • If the student tested positive for COVID, at least I0 days after student’s sample collection.
    • Due to the nature of this novel coronavirus, even if the exposed student is asymptomatic or tests negative for COVID or is diagnosed with an alternative diagnosis or infection (e.g. influenza; hand, foot & mouth disease; norovirus), the student must still quarantine for 14 days after the last time the student was in close contact with the person who tested positive before returning to school.

In assessing potential exposure, “close contact” includes:

  • Being within 6 feet of someone who has COVID-19 for at least 15 minutes, up to 48 hours before symptoms began.
  • Providing at home care, sharing utensils or having direct physical contact with a person (touched, hugged, or kissed them) who has CoVID-19.
  • Staying overnight for at least one night in a household with a person who tests positive for COVID within 48 hours of the onset of symptoms.

Lower Campus Protocols


Classrooms will be arranged to maximize student space yet still provide comfortable, age-appropriate learning environments. Students will have assigned seats. Each classroom will be considered a cohort and will remain together for the entire school day. This includes all recesses, lunch, and specials.

Preschool students will stay primarily in the preschool space, except for outdoor time, and will remain together with their class as a cohort, using the preschool entrance and exit, and eating lunch in Berg Hall.

All student supplies that are purchased by individual families will be kept apart and each student will use his or her own supplies.

Supplies and equipment will be limited to use by one group of students at a time, with cleaning and disinfecting protocols taking place between uses. Students will not be allowed to share electronic devices, books, toys, and other games or learning aids that are unable to be disinfected appropriately.




School begins at 7:45 a.m., Monday through Friday




  • 2:30 - Preschool Students and Siblings
  • 2:45 - Kindergarten through 3rd Grade and Siblings 
  • 2:50 - 4th and 5th Grades


  • 11:50 - Preschool Students and Siblings
  • 12:00 - Kindergarten through 3rd Grade and Siblings
  • 12:05 - 4th and 5th Grades

Hot lunch will not be available the first semester. We will re-evaluate for second semester.  Students should bring a packed cold lunch to school every day plus snacks and a drink.  Lunches cannot be refrigerated or heated at school.  Please send the bagged lunch with your student and do not drop off during the school day.  

Students will eat lunch in their cohorts.


Students are encouraged to bring a small snack to school along with a refillable water bottle or a drink.

Upper Campus Protocols


Hot lunch will not be offered this year.  Students are to bring a cold lunch every day. Microwaves and refrigerators will not be available. Students should bring lunches to school with them.   


School begins promptly at 7:50 a.m. All doors will be open at 7:15 a.m. Students must report directly to their first period class. Students may not congregate in the cafeteria, hallways, bathrooms or the lobby.

Middle School – Middle School Doors, 69th Street

  • All middle school students should enter the building through the Middle School doors located on the north east side of school on 69th street. 
  • Look for the A-frame sign in front of the doors labeled “Middle School”.
  • Students will proceed directly to their first class.

Upper Campus Freshman and Sophomores – Main Lobby Doors

  • Students in grades 9 and 10 will enter through the main lobby doors.
  • Students are expected to go directly to their first class.

Upper Campus Juniors and Seniors – Student Parking Lot/East Doors

  • Students in grades 11 and 12 will enter through the east doors on 23rd Avenue directly across from the student parking lot.
  • Juniors and seniors are expected to park in the student lot on 23rd Ave.
  • Students are expected to go directly to their first class.

Upper Campus students who ride the bus to school will be dropped off in front of the building on 69th Street and then should proceed to their designated doors to enter the building.



Student Dismissal

Students may exit the building through the lobby, middle school, or east doors. Students are expected to clear out of the building as soon as possible.

Middle School

  • Monday through Thursday: 3:05 p.m.
  • Friday: 12:30 p.m.

9th and 10th Grade

  • Monday through Thursday: 3:00 p.m.
  • Friday: 12:25 p.m.

11th and 12th Grade

  • Monday through Thursday: 2:55 p.m.
  • Friday: 12:20 p.m.
  • Classrooms will be limited to 20 student desks. Desks will be arranged in 5 rows of 4 deep to maximize space between students.  Teacher desks will be in the front of the room.
  • Any class period rosters exceeding 20 students will be moved to a space in the building that is able to accommodate proper social distancing.  These areas include the cafeteria, LRC, and the Buri-Nelson theater.  
  • Seating charts will be utilized in all classes to assist with contact tracing in case of an infection.
  • Class Masses will take place in the auditorium or other spaces with proper distancing.
  • Students will not be allowed to congregate in the hallways, cafeteria or lobby either before or after school.
  • After students get their health screening in the gymnasium, they are expected to go directly to their first class of the day.
  • All students are expected to go directly home after school. Protocols for student athletes who are staying after school for practice or games will be relayed to them by their coaches.
  • Middle school and high school students will have separate lunch periods, with all students being assigned to designated areas with ample space.  Lunch tables will be spaced appropriately and will be limited to 3 students per table.


Due to the close proximity of the lockers and the potential for close contact between students in the locker areas, SJCA middle school lockers are spread out throughout the first floor.  Any high school student wishing to have a locker just needs to ask at the main office.  Students may instead opt to carry their backpack with them throughout the day.  

Middle school students can bring a light snack and drink or refillable water bottle to eat during their third hour class.
